Ski Olympian Returns to Crumlin Integrated College

On Tuesday 5th March Ski Olympian Lucy Best returned to her “old school” to attend a special assembly in her honour following her recent success achieving two bronze medals for skiing in the 2013 Special Olympic World Winter Games in South Korea.

Lucy was introduced to a packed assembly hall, full of pupils, teachers, classroom assistants and parents by senior teacher Mrs McGarry who had taught her as a pupil of the school between 2003 & 2008.  Mrs McGarry outlined Lucy’s journey through the school, mentioning several of her successes and her keen participation in two of the school’s annual ski trips.

Whilst attending Crumlin Integrated College, or Crumlin High School as it was then, Lucy received support from Mrs Amanda Smith.  Unfortunately, she was unable to attend the celebration, but did send a letter which was read to Lucy.  In the letter Mrs Smith recalled how, “You always told me you were going to take part in the Special Olympics.” Mrs Smith continued with a sentiment that could apply to us all, “You always wanted to do your best and I think you have proved that you can do anything you want with the right attitude and by believing in yourself.”

Lucy then took some time to answer questions from the Head Boy and Head Girl.  She recalled how the school ski trips stood out as highlights of her time at the school as were achieving at GCSE level and making new friends.  To those about to leave for this year’s ski trip she had this advice, “Attend the training and take it easy until you get used to the snow.  Enjoy the sport and listen to your instructors.”  Afterwards Lucy was presented with a momento of her visit by our Head Girl.

The highlight of the assembly was Lucy’s presentation of her experiences at the Games in South Korea.  The pupils and staff sat enthralled as she recounted her experiences of the opening ceremony, her participation in the events, presentation of medals and the welcome she received on her return home.

The assembly concluded with the school wishing Lucy all the best in her training for the next Olympics in Austria in 2017.
